The system even used terms used in railroading: the homes and businesses where fugitives would rest and eat were called “stations” and “depots” and were run by “stationmasters,” those who contributed money or goods were “stockholders,” and the “conductor” was responsible for moving fugitives from one station to the next.For the slave, running away to the North was anything but easy. The first step was to escape from the slaveholder. For many slaves, this meant relying on his or her own resources. Sometimes a “conductor,” posing as a slave, would enter a plantation and then guide the runaways northward. The fugitives would move at night. They would generally travel between 10 and 20 miles to the next station, where they would rest and eat, hiding in barns and other out-of-the-way places. While they waited, a message would be sent to the next station to alert its stationmaster.The fugitives would also travel by train and boat – conveyances that sometimes had to be paid for. Money was also needed to improve the appearance of the runaways – a black man, woman, or child in tattered clothes would invariably attract suspicious eyes. Underground Railroad was a network of people, both black and white, who helped escaped enslaved persons from the southern United States by providing them with refuge and assistance. The Society of Friends (Quakers) is often regarded as the first organized group to actively assist escaped enslaved persons. How the Underground Railroad Worked
The majority of enslaved persons aided by the Underground Railroad were able to flee to neighboring states like as Kentucky, Virginia, and Maryland. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 made catching fugitive enslaved persons a lucrative industry in the deep South, and there were fewer hiding places for them as a result of the Act. Fugitive Slave Acts
The Fugitive Slave Acts were a major cause for many fugitive slaves to flee to Canada. This legislation, which was passed in 1793, authorized local governments to catch and extradite fugitive enslaved individuals from inside the borders of free states back to their places of origin, as well as to penalize anybody who assisted the fleeing enslaved people. Personal Liberty Laws were introduced in certain northern states to fight this, but they were overturned by the Supreme Court in 1842. In following years, Tubman returned to the plantation on a number of occasions to rescue family members and other individuals.

Tubman transported groups of fugitives to Canada on a regular basis, believing that the United States would not treat them favorably.

Even before the nineteenth century, it appears that a mechanism to assist runaways existed. Historically, the Fugitive Slave Acts were two pieces of legislation established by Congress in 1793 and 1850 (and repealed in 1864) that allowed for the capture and return of fugitive slaves who escaped from one state into another or into a federally administered region. During the nineteenth century, African-American slaves in the United States sought to flee to free states or even as far north as Canada with the assistance of abolitionists, who provided them with transportation and shelter. Other routes led to Mexico or other parts of the world. It is believed that between 1810 and 1850, between 30,000 and 100,000 persons managed to escape captivity by way of the Underground Railroad, however only 6,000 people are recorded in the Census. The escape network was “underground” in the sense of underground resistance, but it was never actually subterranean in the traditional meaning of the word.
- These personnel were organized into tiny, autonomous groups who, in order to maintain secret, were only aware of the location of connecting “stations” along the route and had little knowledge of their local surroundings.
- Free-born Blacks, white abolitionists, former slaves (either escaped or manumitted), and Native Americans were among the various “conductors” on the railroad.
- Connecticut had 97 slaves and 7,844 free persons of color in 1820, according to the United States Census Bureau.
- Twenty-nine percent of these inhabitants were individuals of color, and they were all unemployed.

This organization was one of the first women’s abolitionist groups in the United States, founded in 1848. Cross Street Church was so strongly associated with the anti-slavery movement during this time period that it was commonly referred to as “Freedom Church.”

One of the abolitionist movement’s most under-the-radar aspects was the underground railroad. Several Middletown residents, both white and black, volunteered as underground railroad conductors, providing safe haven for slaves who were leaving the South in quest of freedom in Canada or other countries. With the enactment of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850, the necessity for an underground railroad become even more urgent. As subterranean railroad conductors, Jehiel Beman and his second wife, Nancy, worked alongside important white citizens Jesse Baldwin and Benjamin Douglas after returning to Middletown in 1854, and possibly earlier.
In Middletown, there were abolitionists of both races, as well as pro-slavery factions, as well as some who felt that Black emigration to Africa was the key to putting an end to inter-racial warfare.
Cross Street, according to LeverettBeman, was “overrun by those worse than Southernbloodhounds.” Despite his belief that slavery was immoral, Willbur Fisk, Wesleyan’s first President and a member of the mostly-white Colonization Society, thought that the answer to the problem of slavery rested in the voluntaryemigration of Blacks to Africa, rather than in the abolitionist effort.
In the summer of 1831, a group of African-Americans assembled at the Cross Street Church to express their opposition to colonization.
