That there has been such a surge in interest implies that we have collectively realized what McKim had long ago: that the stories of people who left slavery and those who assisted them in their journey to freedom are among the most moving in our country’s history. Our respect, reverence, and outrage were all expressed by McKim with the expectation that these stories would elicit our response. In addition to this, as more recent research has demonstrated, they should arouse our curiosity and skepticism about how the Underground Railroad actually functioned, why stories about it have such a consistent effect on us, and what they teach us—or prevent us from learning—about ourselves and our nation. It’s unclear who came up with the phrase. A frustrated slave owner has been blamed for the incident, but a fugitive slave has been blamed for it as well. At the conclusion of a decade during which railways had come to symbolize wealth and development and three thousand miles of real track had been constructed throughout the country, it made its first appearance in print in an abolitionist journal in 1839. In his 1845 autobiography, Frederick Douglass laments that indiscreet abolitionists are turning the Underground Railroad into “anuppergroundrailroad,” and Harriet Beecher Stowe used the term in her novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” in which a slave-catcher warns another not to delay pursuing a fugitive “until the gal’s been carried on the underground railroad.” According to a report in the next year’s edition of the Times, the phrase had “came into fairly common usage to indicate the organized arrangements made in various regions of the country to help fugitives from slavery.” We have seldom had a phrase that is so enticing to the imagination, or one that is so subject to misunderstanding, entered our national vernacular before. Both of these characteristics are exploited by Colson Whitehead in his latest work, which consciously does what nearly every young child studying our history does naively: adopting the phrase “Underground Railroad” literally. A teen-age girl named Cora flees the Georgia plantation where she was born into slavery and travels north on a series of rickety underground trains—one- or two-car numbers, driven by actual conductors, and reached through caves or trapdoors in buildings owned by sympathetic whites—before reaching the United States. It was the psychically active elevators in Whitehead’s outstanding debut novel, “The Intuitionist,” that first indicated his fondness for magical architecture. They were the ideal device, mixing symbolic meaning with Marvel Comics pleasure while being freed of improbability thanks to the uniqueness and intensity of Whitehead’s imagination. The method that he used before in “The Underground Railroad” is more or less reversed in “The Underground Railroad.” As an alternative to infusing mystique into a mass-produced box, he transforms our most emotive national metaphor into a mechanical device. We are reminded that no one has ever achieved freedom by the use of metaphor. The Underground Railroad is one of Whitehead’s primary concerns in this book, and he wants to discover how it truly operated, at what cost, and for whom, among other things. Wilbur Siebert, a historian at Ohio State University, was the first to pose these problems in a comprehensive and methodical manner. For more than a decade in the late nineteenth century, when many parents of Civil War dead were still alive to mourn the loss of their children and former slaves still outnumbered freeborn African-Americans, Siebert sought information about their efforts to assist fugitive slaves from slavery from surviving abolitionists or their kinsmen. An underground railroad network of more than three thousand anti-slavery activists, most of them white, who assisted in the transportation of mostly nameless runaways to freedom was detailed in the history published in 1898 under the title “The Underground Railroad from Slavery to Freedom.” Since then, the narrative of the Underground Railroad has been spreading across the society, accumulating more information along the way and substantially influencing our perception of it. An abolitionist group working undercover (through tunnels, trapdoors, and hidden passageways) and using covert methods (lanterns placed in windows and quilts hung on laundry lines) to assist enslaved African-Americans in their journey to freedom is depicted in that image. The church played at least as important a role in raising funds, assisting fugitives, and assisting former slaves who had found their way to freedom in establishing a new life as it did in assisting fugitives. Individuals, as much as institutions, are affected by this unbalanced perception. Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison is well-known in the United States, but almost no one is familiar with the black abolitionist William Still, who was one of the most effective operators and most important historians of the Underground Railroad. His book on the subject, published a quarter of a century before Siebert’s, was based on detailed notes he kept while assisting 639 fugitives on their journey to freedom. Similarly, more people are familiar with the name Levi Coffin, a white Midwestern Quaker, than they are with the name Louis Napoleon, a freeborn black abolitionist, despite the fact that both men risked their lives in order to assist thousands of fugitives in their escape. When it comes to anti-slavery campaigners, the risk they endured is inversely proportionate to the amount of credit they are given. The act of publicly opposing slavery required great courage practically everywhere in antebellum America, and some white abolitionists paid a high price as a result of their efforts. A handful were slain, some died in prison, and others escaped to Canada because they were facing imprisonment or worse. Those, however, were the outliers. Most whites were subjected to just penalties and the disapproval of some members of their society, whilst those who resided in anti-slavery strongholds, as many did, were able to go about their business with little to no consequence.

Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was the most well-known conductor of the Underground Railroad during its heyday. When she and two of her brothers fled from a farm in Maryland in 1849, she was given the name Harriet (her married name was Tubman). She was born Araminta Ross, and she was raised as Harriet Tubman. They returned a couple of weeks later, but Tubman fled on her own again shortly after, this time making her way to the state of Pennsylvania. In following years, Tubman returned to the plantation on a number of occasions to rescue family members and other individuals.
Tubman was distraught until she had a vision of God, which led her to join the Underground Railroad and begin escorting other fugitive slaves to the Maryland state capital.
Frederick Douglass
In his house in Rochester, New York, former enslaved person and celebrated author Frederick Douglasshid fugitives who were assisting 400 escapees in their journey to freedom in Canada. Reverend Jermain Loguen, a former fugitive who lived in the adjacent city of Syracuse, assisted 1,500 escapees on their journey north. The Vigilance Committee was established in Philadelphia in 1838 by Robert Purvis, an escaped enslaved person who later became a trader. Josiah Henson, a former enslaved person and railroad operator, founded the Dawn Institute in Ontario in 1842 to assist fugitive slaves who made their way to Canada in learning the necessary skills to find work.

Who Ran the Underground Railroad?
The vast majority of Underground Railroad operators were regular individuals, including farmers and business owners, as well as preachers and religious leaders. Some affluent individuals were active, including Gerrit Smith, a billionaire who stood for president on two separate occasions. Smith acquired a full family of enslaved people from Kentucky in 1841 and freed them from their captivity. Abolitionist John Brown would go on to play a variety of roles during his life. His most well-known duty was conducting an assault on Harper’s Ferry in order to raise an armed army that would march into the deep south and free enslaved people at gunpoint. Ultimately, Brown’s forces were beaten, and he was executed for treason in 1859.
- The year 1844, he formed a partnership with Vermont schoolteacher Delia Webster, and the two were jailed for assisting an escaped enslaved lady and her young daughter.

Written by Dr. Bryan Walls As a descendant of slaves who traveled the Underground Railroad, I grew up enthralled by the stories my family’s “Griot” told me about his ancestors. It was my Aunt Stella who was known as the “Griot,” which is an African name that means “keeper of the oral history,” since she was the storyteller of our family. Despite the fact that she died in 1986 at the age of 102, her mind remained keen till the very end of her life. During a conversation with my Aunt Stella, she informed me that John Freeman Walls was born in 1813 in Rockingham County, North Carolina and journeyed on the Underground Railroad to Maidstone, Ontario in 1846.

In order to satiate their hunger for freedom and proceed along the treacherous Underground Railroad to the heaven they sung about in their songs—namely, the northern United States and Canada—they took this risky route across the wilderness.

What was the Underground Railroad? : Harriet Tubman
The Underground Railroad was established in the early nineteenth century and reached its zenith between 1850 and 1860, when it was at its most active. It’s possible that reliable numbers on fleeing slaves who used the Underground Railroad may never be discovered because so much of what we know now comes from narratives written after the Civil War. Between 1810 and 1860, it is estimated that over 100,000 slaves managed to escape using the network. In the upper south, the bulk of slaves were transported from slave states that bordered free states such as Kentucky, Virginia, and Maryland; very few slaves were transported from the Deep South.

Why was it called Underground Railroad?
The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad; it was a network of people and ideas. Due to the network’s clandestine actions being secret and illegal, it was necessary for them to remain “underground” in order to aid fleeing slaves in their efforts to remain hidden from the authorities. Historically, the word “railroad” was used to describe a developing transportation system whose proponents communicated in secret through the usage of railroad code (also known as railroad code).
The homes where fugitives would rest and dine were referred to as “stations” or “depots,” and the owner of the property was referred to as the “station master,” while the “conductor” was the person in charge of transporting slaves from one station to the next, among other things.

Organization
With no clearly defined routes, the Underground Railway was a loosely structured network of linkages rather than a well-organized network of connections. They assisted slaves in their journey to freedom by providing them with housing and transportation. Small groups of supporters were formed independently; the majority of them were familiar with a few connecting stations but were unfamiliar with the complete trip. This technique maintained the confidentiality of those participating while also reducing the likelihood of infiltration.

Train conductors on the Underground Railroad were free persons who provided assistance to escaped slaves moving via the Underground Railroad system. Runaway slaves were assisted by conductors, who provided them with safe transportation to and from train stations. Henry Bibb was born into slavery in Kentucky in the year 1815, and he was the son of a slave owner. After several failed efforts to emancipate himself from slavery, he maintained the strength and persistence to continue his struggle for freedom despite being captured and imprisoned numerous times. His determination paid off when he was able to successfully escape to the northern states and then on to Canada with the assistance of the Underground Railroad, which had been highly anticipated. The following is an excerpt from his tale, in which he detailed one of his numerous escapes and the difficulties he faced as a result of his efforts.

The Beginnings Of the Underground Railroad
Even before the nineteenth century, it appears that a mechanism to assist runaways existed. In 1786, George Washington expressed dissatisfaction with the assistance provided to one of his escaped slaves by “a organization of Quakers, founded for such purposes.” The Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers as they are more officially known, were among the first abolitionist organizations to emerge. Their influence may have played a role in Pennsylvania becoming the first state to abolish slavery, which was home to a large number of Quakers.
In recognition of his contributions, Levi is often referred to as the “president of the Underground Railroad.” In Fountain City, Ohio, on Ohio’s western border, the eight-room Indiana home they bought and used as a “station” before they came to Cincinnati has been preserved and is now a National Historic Landmark.
“Eliza” was one of the slaves who hid within it, and her narrative served as the inspiration for the character of the same name in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s abolitionist classic Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
The Underground Railroad Gets Its Name
Owen Brown, the father of radical abolitionist John Brown, was a member of the Underground Railroad in the state of New York during the Civil War. An unconfirmed narrative suggests that “Mammy Sally” designated the house where Abraham Lincoln’s future wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, grew up and served as a safe house where fugitives could receive food, but the account is doubtful. Conductors On The Railroad

White males who were found assisting slaves in their escape were subjected to heavier punishments than white women, but both were likely to face at the very least incarceration.
The most severe punishments, such as hundreds of lashing with a whip, burning, or hanging, were reserved for any blacks who were discovered in the process of assisting fugitive fugitives on the loose.
The Civil War On The Horizon
Events such as the Missouri Compromise and the Dred Scott decision compelled more anti-slavery activists to take an active part in the effort to liberate slaves in the United States. After Abraham Lincoln was elected president, Southern states began to secede in December 1860, putting an end to the Union’s hopes of achieving independence from the United States. Abolitionist newspapers and even some loud abolitionists warned against giving the remaining Southern states an excuse to separate. Lucia Bagbe (later known as Sara Lucy Bagby Johnson) is considered to be the final slave who was returned to bondage as a result of the Fugitive Slave Law.
Her owner hunted her down and arrested her in December 1860.
Even the Cleveland Leader, a Republican weekly that was traditionally anti-slavery and pro-the Fugitive Slave Legislation, warned its readers that allowing the law to run its course “may be oil thrown upon the seas of our nation’s difficulties,” according to the newspaper.
In her honor, a Grand Jubilee was celebrated on May 6, 1863, in the city of Cleveland.
The Reverse Underground Railroad
A “reverse Underground Railroad” arose in the northern states surrounding the Ohio River during the Civil War. The black men and women of those states, whether or not they had previously been slaves, were occasionally kidnapped and concealed in homes, barns, and other structures until they could be transported to the South and sold as slaves.
